"Klugman B'way odd man out
Source says actor could leave 'Sunshine Boys'
NEW YORK -- Jack Klugman likely will leave the National Actors Theater production of Neil Simon's "The Sunshine Boys" in May, according to an executive source with the company.
The Simon comedy -- a limited run scheduled to end in January but held over because of its initially high popularity -- has been playing to a nearly half-empty houses during the week: Last week, it played to 53% capacity; the previous week, to 54% capacity.
But executives at co-star Tony Randall's nonprofit National Actors Theater are not concerned yet. "Business has not been good on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays," said Fred Walker, managing director of the National Actors Theater. He added: "But we're sold out on the weekends, and the show has not lost money."
The show needs to gross $150,000 per week to stay open, per a source familiar with the show's finances.
The show is planning a limited national tour, according to Walker, with stops in Los Angeles and Chicago in the offing, and a possible London engagement in the winter."
