September 13th, the Castaway, Burbank, (The Hollywood Times), 9/13/15 – “Jeff Rector has done a great deal of work with a lot of men and women of Burbank themselves, it’s just great. It’s a great city!”, – said legendary actor John Savage about the festival and its organizers.
On September 13th talent, press and guests showed up at the beautiful place of the Castaway, a hilltop restaurant in Burbank, to celebrate the Closing Night of Burbank International Film Festival. Every year President and Artistic Director Jeff Rector, the City of Burbank and Council do excellent job celebrating filmmaking business in Burbank. They put a lot of effort to make this event better and better every year. As Burbank City Councilman David Gordon said: “The Burbank Film Festival gives people, who might not, otherwise, have a chance to exhibit their work, a unique opportunity to be seen and discovered. This year there is more excitement, Jeff Rector and his team are learning from experience how to make it better each time”.
No doubt, the organizers did excellent job inviting one of the most recognizable Hollywood legends to shine during the Closing Night and Award Ceremony: legendary actress and activist Marsha Hunt who signed her first contract with Paramount Pictures back in 1930s; award-winning filmmaker Mick Garris, NBC4’s weathercaster Fritz Coleman who served as a host that evening, screenplay writer Larry Cohen, an award-winning celebrity photographer Douglas Kirkland accompanied by his son director Mark Kirkland, and legendary composer Dennis McCarthy (The Twilight Zone, Dynasty). Award presenters included award-winning director Mark Kirkland (The Simpsons), actress Crystal Allen (Sopranos, Sex And The City), actress Kristen Renton (Days Of Our Lives), multitalented actor Tim Russ (Rampart), amazing actors John Savage and Blanca Blanco, actress June Squibb (Nebraska), actor and director Patrick Kilpatrick (Minority Report), actor Isaac Singleton Jr (Anger Management), and Executive Director David Collins. The evening was marked by the speech of 97 year old actress Marsha Hunt who received the special Awareness Award at the Gala. Also, the guests had a chance to watch the best photos of celebrity photographer Douglas Kirkland shown on the screen: the images of Marilyn Monroe, Brad Pitt, The Beatles, and other Hollywood icons brought back good memories. It was great to see director Mark Kirkland presenting Photography Award to his father Douglas Kirkland as Mr. Kirkland-son was joking: “We are like brothers with only 22 years apart”.
Famous actor Michael Paré received the Best Actor Award for 4GOT10 movie presented by actor John Savage. Composer Dennis McCarthy received Composer Award, screenplay writer Larry Cohen was honored by Screenwriting Award, and Lifetime Achievement Award was presented to filmmaker Mick Garris. The director of Hoovey Sean McNamara and his crew were presented Best Feature Film Award, and the crew and the director of Sharknado 3: Oh Hell No! Anthony Ferrante accepted Scifi/Fantasy/Horror/Thriller/Feature Award. As director Anthony Ferrante revealed later that evening: “They are talking about Part 4 (Sharknado movie – SK), see what happens”.

The Festival’s mission is to promote up-and-coming filmmakers by providing a gateway to expand their careers in the entertainment industry. The event shines a light on the unknown talent of today, helping them become the celebrated filmmakers of tomorrow. Not only do the organizers actively champion independent filmmaking, this is one of the few, if not the only film festival in the world that offers film distribution seminars to help filmmakers guide their cinematic vision toward profitability (official source).
