Season 8

159. Critical Condition (3)
gs: Brad Hawkins () Michael Fairman (Director - CIA) John Livingston () Karri Turner (Lt. Harriet Sims-Roberts) Shari Rose () Jamison Yang (Anesthesiologist) Matthew Lang (Sgt. Manning) Scott Lawrence (Cmdr. Sturgis Turner) Chuck Carrington (PO1 Tiner) Tanya Memme () Lesli Margherita (Lt. Urbanski) Nanci Chambers (Lt. Loren Singer) Cameron Graham () Dean Stockwell (Senator Sheffield) Scott Paulin (Captain Johnson) Zoe McLellan (PO2 Jennifer Coates) Michael Bellisario (Mike Roberts) Christine Elise (Cmdr. Ferraro) Paul Collins (SecNav. Nelson) John D'Aquino (Stuart Dunston)

The episode starts with a short recap of where we left off last season: Bud & PO Coates walking along a dirt road enroute to attend the ground-breaking of the new school, when they spot a small boy playing in a field that had yet to be cleared of mines. As Coates runs for help, there is an explosion behind her. She turns in time to see Bud injured in the explosion and runs to his side. Coates insists that Bud must be transported on the helo that brought them in, that Bud won't be able to wait for the proper medevac chopper.

Bud is airlifted to a field hospital, critical, but still alive. As luck would have it, ZNN reporter Stuart Dunston just happens to be at the base camp when Bud is brought it. Dunston reports the arrival of an injured JAG officer that was brought it, but does not report the name. Chegwiggen advises Harriet, but reminds her he is still on the Seahawk. She tries to contact him by instant messaging, but does not receive a reply.

Onboard the USS Seahawk, Harm & Mac prepare to meet Sturgis for their trip back to the states. Before they can leave, they are notified that Bud is being transferred to the USS Guadalcanal medical facility. Harm contacts the Admiral to notify him about Bud and requests permission to stay behind.

The JAG staff at HQ is stunned when they hear the latest ZNN report about Bud: That he was trying to save the life of a young child, who already knew the precise location of the mines and wasn't in any real danger.

Harm & Mac transfers to the Guadalcanal against order and is briefed by PO Coates. Bud's younger brother Mikey arrives at Harriet's home and finds her very anguished. Mikey tries to get her mind off of things by keeping her busy.

During Bud's second operation for his leg, his heart stops and doesn't respond doesn't respond to the resuscitation attempts. The doctor pronounces Bud dead. When the doctor tries to break the news to Harm, Mac & Coates, she is notified that his heart just "kick-started" by itself. Later, she tells Harm & Mac that Bud is quite the fighter and in stable condition. The two of them share an emotional moment together upon hearing that news.

Meanwhile, the SecNav is grilled by Senate Intelligence Committee over his decision to have JAG single-handedly conduct the field investigation into the threats posed by Kabir.

b: 24-Sep-2002 pc: 159 w: Charles Holland s: Donald P. Bellisario & Charles Holland d: Jeannot Szwarc

NOTE: If Christine Elise (Surgeon) looks familiar, its because she played Emily Valentine in "Beverly Hills, 90210"; not to mention Chief Gillespie's daughter Lana Farren in the TV version of "In The Heat Of The Night", which starred Carroll O'Connor as Gillespie.
We learn in this episode that PO1 Tiner is scheduled to graduated from law school later this year.
If you recognize Dean Stockwell playing Senator Sheffield, its because he portrayed the same part in last season's short-lived Bellisarius production, "First Monday".
In the 7th season episode, "First Casualty", ZNN Reporter Stuart Dunston advised that he would stay away from reporting for awhile. He obviously didn't stay away as long as he said he would: He was back in Afghanistan reporting for ZNN in less than 2 months as evidenced by his appearance in this episode.
The realism of the scenes showing Bud to be missing his right leg has caused many, many fans to inquire as to whether the actor, Patrick Labyorteaux lost one of his own legs as well. The actor in real-life has both of his legs, the scenes when filmed, utilize special-effects to show Bud to be "missing" his right leg.
While the Director-CIA is testifying, there is a lady sitting to his left. She will appear later on in the season in "Need to Know" & we learn that she is Catherine Gale, Legal Counsel for the CIA. She makes a return appearance in "Pas de Deux". In this episode, however, she appears in an uncredited role.

Her first assignment is second chair to Harm in a negligent-homicide case against Lt. Reynolds, a SEAL. b: 22-Oct-2002 pc: 163 w: Don McGill d: Harvey Laidman

NOTE: PO Moritz reason for naming Harm as his defense counsel is due to his defense of Lt. Mark Gordon in the case from the season 3 episode, "Clipped Wings".
Stock footage is used from various sources on the flying scenes throughout the episode.
Harm is advised that due to staff shortages, Harm & Mac can expect to serve time on future cases as temporary judges.

Harm defends a female pilot accused of sexual harassment by a member of her crew who claims she ruined his future in the military because he rebuffed her advances. Harm is skeptical of his client's denials of the charges, while his co-counsel, Lt. Cmdr. Manetti, is sympathetic, causing tension between the JAG lawyers. Prosecutors Mac and Sturgis seem to have an open and shut case with their star witness testifying until Harm throws them a curveball that throws the case wide open.

b: 05-Nov-2002 pc: 165 w: Philip DeGuere, Jr. d: Bradford May

NOTE: This episode was loosely based on a combination of the USS Scorpion loss and our cable tapping missions, not to mention the numerous rumored collisions that may have occurred between US and Soviet subs.
You may have recognized Donna Bullock when she was talking to the SecNav. She was the unfortunate Press Secretary in the movie, "Air Force One".

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

166. Ready or Not
gs: Amy Landers () James Morrison (General West) Karri Turner (Lt. Harriet Sims-Roberts) Leon Russom (Gen. Manzarek) David Andriole (Col. Haller) Scott Lawrence (Cmdr. The future of seven seamen hang in the balance due to Lt. Singer's recommendation of court martial for all of them following a mishap on the ship. However, Singer's career could also be doomed if the father of her unborn child is someone on the Seahawk, and it's Harm and Mac's job to find out who it is. The problem is, the career-oriented Singer isn't talking, so Harm enlists the help of Lt. Manetti to do some sneaky behind-the-scenes investigating in order discover the identity of the father.

b: 19-Nov-2002 pc: 167 w: Darcy Meyers d: Richard Compton

NOTE: When Harm was first talking to the Air Boss, a klaxon sounded in the background. The klaxon that was used was the same tones used to dispatch Station 51 in the 1970's TV show, "Emergency".
This episode accurately pointed out that Star Trek was not just a science-fiction, space-travel series. Many of the works of Shakespeare have been woven into the fabric of the Star Trek franchise.
One of the reasons why Star Trek episodes have been used in classes for over 30 years.

This was easy for "JAG" to do, since Paramount Studios owns both Star Trek & JAG. (Trivia: Star Trek was originally owned by Desilu Studios, but financial problems forced Desilu to sell the studio to next-door Paramount Studios. The huge amount of money that Paramount has made from "inheriting" the Star Trek franchise with that purchase, has to be arguably, the deal of the century.

Holt) Rocco Sisto (Interpol Officer) Mat Hostetler (PO Marshall)

Harm and Lt. Cmdr. Manetti travel to Naples, Italy when an Interpol officer believes someone aboard a US destroyer is a serial killer who has killed four women while on leave in European ports.

Mac remains onboard the USS Seahawk until a replacement for Lt. Singer is assigned. (See "Notes" below)

b: 26-Nov-2002 pc: 168 w: Charles Holland d: Michael Schultz

NOTE: Catherine Bell (Mac) does not appear at all in this episode, so that she could appear in a movie with Jim Carrey. To explain her absence, Mac has been assigned as the Staff-JAG onboard the USS Seahawk, until a replacement for Lt. Singer is named.

169. All Ye Faithful
gs: Dori Mizrahi () Joanne McGee (Nurse) Tony Denison () Joey Naber () Karri Turner (Lt. Harriet Sims-Roberts) Tom Virtue (Warrant Officer) Careena Melia () Scott Lawrence (Cmdr. Sturgis Turner) Steven C. Nelson () Chuck Carrington (PO1 Tiner) Daniel Bess (Marine Cpl. Joseph Tenny) Gary P. Stein, Jr () Bruce French () Kevin Daniels (Lt. Cmdr. Suttles) Terry O'Quinn (Admiral Boone) Eric Pierpoint (CAG) Zoe McLellan (PO2 Jennifer Coates) Michael Bellisario ("Mikey" Roberts) Roger Ranney (Lt. Commander Gaudino) Isabella Hofmann (Meredith Cavanaugh) Mike Batayeh () Jeff MacKay (Big Bud Roberts)

On board the aircraft carrier USS Coral Sea, Harm & Admiral Boone await the arrival of the transport plane to take them back to DC. Harm was onboard the carrier to review the new Atlantic Fleet JAG command structure, while Admiral Boone was onboard making a business representation to the CAG of the Coral Sea. Admiral Boone, reassigned when SecNav Nelson was replaced, tells Harm that he's retired for good.

Just before they board their aircraft, the CAG tells Adm. Boone he was impressed with his presentation, but when Harm goes to shake the CAG's hand goodbye, the CAG refuses to take his hand, brushing him aside. Harm is left wondering why the CAG, who he had never met, appears not to like him. They then exit to the flight deck in time to see their plane about to land. The landing however, doesn't occur, since their tailhook broke away & landed on the deck. The COD initiates an emergency take-off, leaving the two friends with the realization that they will spending this Christmas Eve on a carrier.

Harm meets Adm. Boone with the day's flight schedule, which indicates a F-14 is scheduled to return to the NAS at Lakehurst, NJ -- which gives them an opportunity to still make Christmas Eve celebrations they both have planned. While trying to convince the F-14 crew to give up their flight, the Tomcat crew is not open to bribery, until Harm mentions that he can introduce the two of them to Jennifer Lopez, next time they are on land. Intrigued, they agree. Adm. Boone asks Harm that he didn't know he saw Jennifer Lopez twice a year. Harm replies, "Of course, she's my dental hygienist."

The CAG will hear none of it, insisting that Harm is not allowed to fly the F-14, being rude & unbendable, upset that he dumped a F-14 into the Atlantic last year. The CAG then explains that the F-14 belonged to him who was waiting for its arrival. He doesn't buy that the aircraft was to blame, implying it was pilot error. When the CAG learns that the Inspector General is enroute for a surprise visit of his pilots, the CAG has no choice but to allow Harm & Adm. Boone to take the F-14. He warns Harm though, that if he does anything other than fly to his established destination, he will see that Harm's wings are pulled.

Back at JAG, the staff is happy to see Mac & PO2 Jennifer Coates, fresh from her deployment from the USS Seahawk. Adm. Chegwidden issued orders to re-assign PO2 Coates to the staff at JAG-HQ. PO1 Tiner is very, very excited that PO2 Coates will be working in the office.

Mac unwraps a gift given to her from Harm before he left, it turns out to be a picture of them while in Afghanistan. Mac tells Coates, though, she gave him a picture frame the same size as the photo.

The Admiral informs Mac that 3 Kuwaiti military attorneys are coming today for a visit, she is to show them around when they arrive. Coates learns that their plane had landed at Dulles & they have rented a car to drive to the JAG offices. However, in trying to navigate around DC, they end up lost.

Sturgis takes the case of Marine Cpl. Joseph Tenny & his wife Mary, who is very pregnant, whose birth is imminent. The couple was evicted from their base housing over a misunderstanding involving the Marine practicing his drums. With nowhere else to turn, they showed up at JAG. Sturgis looks to put them up somewhere they can be comfortable while he looks to find them a place to live. Adm. Chegwidden volunteers to have them relax in his office for the time being.

Bud & Harriet are also having Christmas Eve issues. Bud can't understand why their checking account still haven't received their pay from 3 weeks ago -- and with 11 guests coming for dinner with no food in the house. They decide to leave to go to the disbursement office, leaving Mikey to babysit little AJ. Seeing Harriet eating chinese food, he warns her not to continue as its 5 days old.

While at the personnel office, Bud & Harriet talk to a Warrant Officer who is unsympathetic to their situation and gives them a tongue lashing for waiting till the last minute to shop for food. While being yelled at by the Warrant Officer, Harriet suddenly gets nauseous and runs to the restroom. Afterwards, Bud sits her in the hallway and Harriet, frustrated over the lack of help from the Warrant Officers yells over in his direction that she wishes the ghost of Jacob Marley drops chains on his foot. Bud believing Harriet has food poisoning, tells Harriet she needs to go to the hospital, since Harriet isn't well to drive, Bud offers to drive her for the first time since being injured. Harriet tells Bud to slow down, he apologizes, blaming a 'lead foot', then corrects himself to "composite plastic foot."

At the hospital, the Roberts learn that it may be some time before a doctor sees them; but as the nurse leaves the room, Santa pops in & offers to take a look at Harriet. Santa, a doctor who was on his way upstairs to the childrens ward, tells Harriet she doesn't have food poisoning or urinary infection. When asked if he is sure, he looks at the paperwork again, telling them that "he just wanted to check it twice!" Santa then informs her that he knows what it is, but not sure if they want to hear the news.

Meanwhile, the 3 Kuwaitis are still driving around lost; Harm & Adm. Boone onboard the F-14 go through the checklist & take-off, promising to stay away from weather & water. The Warrant Officer finds his office empty of personnel, yelling that they have never secured early on Christmas Eve, the door blows open, a strong wind blows papers around, the WO whispers, "Marley".

After arranging temporary housing, Sturgis goes to tell the Tenny's the good news & finds Mrs. Tenny laying down on the Admirals couch being attended to by Mac & Coates. Mac tells Sturgis that she went into labour. Sturgis trying to figure out if anything is needed, learns that the Admiral delivered little AJ Roberts, then the Admiral introduces him to little Jason Tenny, after having just delivered him as well.

The Kuwaitis finally call Adm. Chegwidden for directions; while on the phone with a screaming baby in the background, he helps them navigate, then tells them they are very close, look for a large brick building with a guard gate on the right side and a radio tower on the roof. The driver, looking up at the sky, sees a red light amongst the stars & exclaims that finally, he sees it.

Patuxent Approach informs Harm that there is a disabled Marine C-130 without navigation instrumentation lost in a heavy cloud deck and informs Harm that they are the only aircraft close enough to help. Adm. Boone warns Harm of the CAG's order and when Harm questions whether they should ignore the distressed aircraft, Adm. Boone replies no they shouldn't. Tracking the other aircraft on radar, but unable to spot the C-130, the C-130 turns on all of their exterior lights. Violating FAA regulations, they cautiously move closer to the other aircraft when they hear a bang & their aircraft starts oscillating. Harm fighting for control, regains it, believing they struck the C-130. When they find out they're ok, they wonder what they hit, Patuxent Approach tells them that he has both of them on the screen & no collision occurred. They further advised that a weather balloon was lost several minutes ago & they must have found it. Still looking for the C-130 they suddenly see the lights.

In the Admiral's Office, Adm. Chegwidden welcomes the Kuwaitis into his office, where Mrs. Tenny & little Jason are still waiting for an ambulance. They insist on blessing the birth of the child by each giving the small child gifts. The last Kuwaiti happens to own multiple apartment complexes in the area & his gift is an apartment for them to live in.

At the Roberts, with no food for their pending guests, Big Bud Roberts offers to take them all to a restaurant, hoping he can pay for it with his credit card. The Warrant Officer arrives at the Roberts, tells them that he's divorced & his son informed him that he would rather spend Christmas with his mother in Buffalo, which is why he was in such a foul mood earlier. In an attempt to make it up to the Roberts, he brought 13 dinners & appetizers from his favourite restaurant. The Roberts insist that he join them for dinner.

Harm moves into front of the C-130 & guides them to their landing. They learn that the C-130 marines were part of the Marines Toys for Tots Santa Caravan delivering toys to the various areas. With Harm's red light on the front of the Tomcat & caravan of toys behind them, the scene (& music) reminiscent of Rudolph is unmistakable.

With everyone at the Roberts, Harriet tells everyone that Santa informed Bud & her that she was "seriously pregnant", but next time, wants milk & cookies. Meredith then offers to play the piano so everyone can sing carols. AJ reluctant for Meredith to play is shocked to learn that she actually plays quite well. Mac alone at the party, calls looking for him & gets his answering machine.

At the Vietnam Memorial Wall during his annual pilgrimage there, this time with Tom Boone, they reflect on Harm's father. Boone remembers watching Hammer being shot down & him parachuting out. They meet a Navy Lieutenant Clarence who is visiting DC for the first time and at the wall. When Harm wishes him to have a good holiday, he tells them that it won't happen. He replies he didn't mean to sound disrespectful, he just graduated from Navy Air Training Command. Harm inquires why he isn't wearing his wings. Lt. Clarence tells them he had to take emergency leave & missed the graduation ceremony. An old college friend is on a suicide watch & intends to see that he will be ok. Harm, introduces themselves and insists on giving him his "winging ceremony", by giving having Admiral Boone pin Harm's gold wings on Lt. Clarence's uniform. When Harm asks Lt. Clarence what his career plans are, he replies that he would like to fly for the Blue Angels some day. With that, Adm. Boone pins the gold wings onto Lt. Clarence; a bell attached to a christmas wreath at the wall begins to ring with the breeze.

With the whole crowd sitting down to dinner at the Roberts, Bud stands to say a few words, but is overcome with emotion. As he starts to say what an interesting year it has been, he notices Harm coming in the front door & welcomes him over to the table. As Harm is taking his seat, Mac notices he is not wearing his gold wings & points to his uniform, Harm promises to tell her all about it later.

With Harm seated, Bud continues by picking up his cane and stating, "God Bless Us, Everyone!"

b: 17-Dec-2002 pc: 169 w: Dana Coen d: Kenneth Johnson

NOTE: The sailors caps reflected the actual hull number of the aircraft carrier, USS Coral Sea, CV-43. The carrier was commissioned on October 1, 1947. The Coral Sea served the Navy & the people of the United States until April 26, 1990, almost 43 years! Regretfully, this fine ship met the fate of most ships: It was sold to be scrapped on May 7, 1993.
This episode once again used the USS Coral Sea as the setting for the story. The actual name & associated hull number was able to be used since the actual carrier had been decommissioned in 1990.
The footage of the bombing run in Vietnam was taken from the 1991 Paramount movie, "Flight of the Intruder", starring Danny Glover.
"TO THE MEN AND WOMEN OF OUR ARMED FORCES DEDICATED TO KEEPING PEACE ON EARTH" --- Onscreen dedication at the end of the episode.

Actress Cindy Ambuehl (Renee Petersen) who in real-life is also pregnant with twins, appears briefly in this episode in an uncredited role.
Recognize who the crooked attorney was? Actor Gavin MacLeod is best known for playing Murray in the 1970's series, "Mary Tyler Moore"; as well as Captain Stubing of "The Love Boat".

In the best tradition of "Ghosts of Christmas Past" which paid tribute to the USO entertainers past & present; "Overdue & Presumed Lost" which saluted the sailors who have been a part of the submarine community, running deep & running silent on their 100th anniversary, "Each Of Us Angels" continues that great tradition by focusing almost exclusively onboard the Navy hospital ship, USS Goodwill, during the battle of Iwo Jima in World War II.

As in "Ghosts of Christmas Past", the regular & recurring cast members of "JAG" will portray other characters within this story.

b: 04-Feb-2003 pc: 172 w: Darcy Meyers d: Bradford May

NOTE: The episode uses Marine combat photography inserted in various parts of the episode, so the color will be somewhat degraded to match it. This was accomplished by using special filters during filming & in post-production. While still being shown in full-color, you will noticed that it will appear as 'faded'; so it is not the fault of your TV set.
The title of this episode is taken from a poem written by Italian Luciano de Crescenzo.
The onscreen dedication at the end of the episode is shown against a backdrop of several photos of combat nurses in action. The dedication is as follows: "Dedicated To All The Angels Who Have Served In Peace and War....Bless Them All".

In yet another "ripped from the headlines" episode, Harm takes his turn on the bench in a 'friendly fire' incident, whereby British troops were killed after an American pilot accidently dropped his bomb ordnance on their location.

Mac is assigned to prosecute the pilot, but has to deal with Harm's repeated impartial rulings. Harm though has his own problems as the SecNav makes it crystal clear to him that a conviction is required to satisfy the British.

News reporter Bill O'Reilly is featured.

b: 11-Feb-2003 pc: 173 w: Paul J. Levine d: Kenneth Johnson

NOTE: This idea for this episode was taken from the events of April 17, 2002, when an American fighter jet dropped a bomb on a group of Canadian soldiers conducting a training excercise near Kandahar, Afghanistan. In the real event, 4 soldiers were killed, and 8 others were wounded, some severly.

A raid by agents of the Immigration & Naturalization Service (INS) on a boat carrying Vietnamese ladies being smuggled into the USA, also nets a distinguished Vietnam-native Marine Lieutenant, who is suspected to have a part in bringing the ladies in for profit.

Harm & Sturgis are assigned to see if the Lieutenants claim that he broke into the warehouse containers to steal is true, or if he really is one of the lead smugglers. They learn that when the Lieutenant was four years old living in Saigon with his mother, he was loaded onto the last helicopter evacuating people from the US Embassy in Saigon on April 29, 1975, just before the city was invaded by North Vietnam. As there was only room for 1 person left on the helicopter, his mother placed him onboard & stayed behind. He was then brought to the US & later joined the Marines, rapidly advancing through the ranks, becoming a pilot & earned great distinction for himself.

During the investigation, they learn that the Lieutenant & his Vietnamese wife were being blackmailed by the owner of a mail-order bride service, serving as a front for the ringleader of smuggling young girls into the USA from Vietnam to work in a sweatshop. The Lieutenant was trying to free his wife's sister from the ship when it was raided. With their cooperation, the INS is able to shut down & arrest the ringleader. In exchange, the INS agrees that the little sister can stay in the USA. The Lieutenant is given a non-judicial punishment for his part & is allowed to stay in the service.

Back in JAG, the SecNav informs the Admiral that due to recent events, such as when the Admiral was accidently ejected from Harm's F-14, an audit of the JAG office, including its personnel & procedures will be conducted. However, the person assigned to conduct the audit is none other than Cmdr. Theodore Lindsey. Cmdr. Lindsey is still holding a grudge against the Admiral, for not recommending his promotion to Captain when AJ was in charge of the promotion board, as well as not allowing Cmdr. Lindsey to return to work in the JAG office.

While interviewing the staff, Cmdr. Lindsey expresses disgust that Harriet's 'temporary' assignment to JAG from the Inspector General's Office has lasted several years, Lt. Singer being on maternity leave for several months when the Navy is short-handed, Harm for shooting a gun in the courtroom and his acts, along with many other issues. When Harm confronts Cmdr. Lindsey, he informs Harm that his recommendations will be to break up the JAG office & that the personnel all be re-assigned.

b: 18-Mar-2003 pc: 176 w: Darcy Meyers d: Terrence O'Hara

NOTE: Production note: When Mac is carrying the file box out in the parking lot (when talking to Lindsey), the box actually was empty & had a hole cut into the side of it in order to hide that actress Cathy Bell was pregnant.

b: 20-May-2003 pc: 182 w: Stephen Zito d: Bradford May

NOTE: This episode (along with the 2 previous episodes) were written long before they normally would have been. This was due to Catherine Bell's pregnancy & planned maternity leave, which would have occurred during the time these episodes would have normally been filmed. As a result, the scenes with Mac were being filmed at the same time as other episodes were being filmed.
The plane crash at the end of the episode was written into the script to give the writers a way to remove the character of Harmon Rabb, Jr., if DJE failed to renew his contract (He eventually did sign a new contract).
